Someone Left This Plastic Drum in Front of the Recycling Shed!

Once again… Town Hall is not a dump for random items! A list of specific items and materials accepted at the Recycling Shed is listed at the Shed as well as on the Arrowsic website.

If this drum is yours, please retrieve it and contact us for advice on proper disposal. Aside from the Shed not being the right place for it, not knowing what contaminants it may contain makes safe and proper disposal problematic. We are always happy to answer questions. Catch us in person or drop an email to arswc@arrowsic.org. We are really very friendly!

Arrowsians should be proud of belonging to a community where residents are usually extremely diligent about responsibly recycling and managing waste.

We sincerely thank you.

Ready for Green Spring Cleaning?

Now that mud season is almost over, it’s great time to go green while you spring clean. All it takes is a little extra planning! Here are 5 tips on how you can reduce your contribution to the landfill while getting rid of excess clutter in your home.  Before you start loading up your trash bin, separate out piles for recycling and rehoming:

  • Place clean and dry household items made from paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, or tin in your recycling bin for curbside pickup.
  • Take gently used items you think other residents of Arrowsic might need or want to the Arrowsic Swap Barn.
  • Recycle or trade-in unwanted electronics at Staples in Brunswick – or bring them to the Arrowsic Recycling Shed and the ARSWC will recycle them for you.
  • Donate clothing, toys, furniture, and other goods to local charities, such as Goodwill in Brunswick or the Habitat for Humanity Restore in Bath. The Freecycle Community Group for Topsham is another helpful non-profit resource for giving and getting used goods.
  • Check with an ARSWC member if you have questions or need advice on how to recycle, repurpose, or rehome your stuff. We love talking trash (and recycling).

The ARSWC will be launching its own green spring-cleaning project in the Swap Barn next month. We plan to sort through items that have been on shelves for a bit too long – and donate them to local charities or recycle them as appropriate. If there is something in the barn that you covet, but haven’t yet claimed, stop by before April 19 or it may be gone!

Essential Rides for Everyday Living in Arrowsic & Georgetown

Age-Friendly Communities of the lower Kennebec, are offering registered Arrowsic and Georgetown residents without other transportation options free rides to different destinations such as the grocery store, medical appointments and social activities.

This program is all about getting neighbors to where they need to go.

Based on driver availability, rides will generally be offered weekdays from 9am-5pm. Once registered, we are asking riders for a three-day advanced notice to allow us time to arrange the ride with one of our volunteer drivers. We hope this program will expand to other communities on the lower Kennebec.

Hook, Line and Sinker Update – 2025-02-28

Dear Townspeople,

The saga continues.

The short version is that we are continuing to follow the process of fulfilling the State’s requirements to gain authorization to have the boat removed. That authorization is probably 30-60 days away.

In the meantime, I continue to have regular conversations with the relevant authorities and with several businesses who can perform the clean up when the time comes. Funding remains an important unknown.

I am happy to field questions or concerns and will post updates in the weekly newsletter and, when there’s news, right here.

Hook, Line and Sinker Update – 2025-02-16

Dear Townspeople,

Many, many hours have gone into solving the problem of the wrecked boat on our shore. We have involved the Sheriff, the State Bureau of Parks & Lands, the office in charge of Submerged Lands, our State Rep and Senator, Maine Harbormasters Association, and marine salvage experts.

At this time, the owner (unbelievably) must be legally allowed time to remove his boat. We (the Select Board) have officially declared the boat abandoned and put in motion the process required to get authorization from the State to remove and dispose of the wreckage. Based on what we know, that authorization is at minimum 3 weeks away.

Several plans are being considered for removal and cleanup (which almost certainly involves returning in the spring to clean the mud flats.) Funding remains an open question.

This situation has been eye-opening for us, to say the least. Legally, there’s nothing we could have done to prevent this from happening. And in spite of boats being abandoned in increasing numbers up and down the coast, there is currently no State or Federal law that addresses this issue.

I am happy to field questions or concerns and will post updates in the weekly newsletter and, when there’s news, right here.

Contribute to The Arrow

The next issue of the Arrow, our town’s independent newsletter, will be published next month. The Arrow is looking for writers who wish to contribute, either occasionally or regularly.

Please send anything you would like to contribute–articles, reports, notices, upcoming meetings, poetry, artwork, and photographs (including historical ones)–to Karin Sadtler at kasadtler@yahoo.com by Monday February 24.
Items for the Community News column, including births, deaths, graduations, personal activities, and other items of interest are requested. We especially welcome notes from new residents, introducing themselves and telling us why they moved to Arrowsic or what they particularly like about Arrowsic. Just a few lines is fine.

We are also seeking to continue to expand our Arts coverage and welcome your artwork, photos, poems, or stories.

Winter Road Conditions:
A reminder that winter roads can be slippery, so please drive carefully. Our plow crews work hard to make sure the roads are cleared and salted/sanded, but it’s always possible that the weather gets ahead of them. If you do encounter any road issues, please call Road Commissioner Jim Stump on his mobile. (207.650.0630)

Abandoned Boat in Arrowsic Bridge Channel:
The boat that was anchored in the channel near the Arrowsic Bridge broke free from its anchor and is now on the mud flats at the mouth of the Sasanoa. It unfortunately came to rest on our shore, and that makes it the Town’s problem.

No one is shocked that it’s come to this, and while the Sheriff’s Office and Coast Guard have known about it since it arrived last fall, no one had authority to deal with it proactively. The owner is a Georgetown resident and is “uncooperative” according the Sheriff. Booms have been placed around the boat to prevent it from leaking toxins; and the DEP and Coast Guard have been on the scene and are confident there is no fuel or oil remaining.

We are working with SeaTow on a plan to remove and dispose of it, but in winter conditions, if it can be done at all, it will take north of $25,000 to do so. Government funding seems to be scarce these days…
To be continued…
