OTHER NEWS

New Animal Control Officer!

Arrowsic now has an animal control officer!

Sam Malsch, a resident of the island, has agreed to take on that task. Her contact information is  animalcontrol@arrowsic.org or call Town Hall at 207-443-4609 and leave a message.

Sam has been a life-long animal lover and advocate. She’s volunteered in animal rescue for approximately 17 years, even helping to found a senior animal rescue that she still volunteers with today. Sam has owned four dogs over the past 20 years with her most recent being two seniors who passed away last fall. She is currently fostering for local rescues and looks forward to serving Arrowsic as ACO.

Keep in mind that the animal control officer only responds to issues with domestic animals (dogs, cats, hamsters, pet goats, etc.) and does not oversee issues with wild animals (deer, wolves, porcupines, bats, skunks, raccoons, etc.). To report issues with wild animals, please call the state game wardens: Regional Communication Center (Augusta) 1-800-452-4664.

Also be aware that State law requires all dogs to be licensed. Barbara Boyce, Arrowsic Town Clerk, oversees dog licensing:

Dog Licenses:
Dogs 6 months and older are required, by State law, to be licensed. To renew or apply for a new dog license, contact the Town Clerk at barbara.boyce@arrowsic.org. You will need to provide proof of rabies vaccination.

The cost for a dog license is $6 for spayed/neutered pets and $11 for others. All dog licenses expire on December 31 of each year. You may renew your dog license anytime between October 15 and January 31.

You must renew your dog license no later than January 31 of each year, or a State imposed late fee of $25 must be charged

Boat Storage at Packard’s Landing

Canoe and kayak storage is available at Packard’s Landing through the summer season. To sign up for one of twelve spots, please go to https://forms.gle/8N4jYEwXkcfofuxz6. Keep in mind that space is limited; currently, there are only six spaces available.

Potential Blizzard Conditions

From Philip Davis, Director of Sagadahoc County Emergency Management Agency (SCEMA):
“We are looking at a Nor’Easter event to impact the residents of Sagadahoc County on Monday. Although snow will begin around the morning commute, travel will become more dangerous as the day goes on. Currently, SCEMA is anticipating (not the NWS) about 5-7 inches of snowfall, with heavier amounts along the coast. The evening commute will see near whiteout or even blizzard conditions and some snow drifts may be as high as 2 feet in some areas.”

Permits Issued

Mike Field, Arrowsic Code Enforcement Officer, issued the following permit.

Photos Wanted for Annual Report

Last year, several citizens provided great photos from their collections for the Annual Report. Although we have those photos we didn’t end up using last year, if you have any historical or contemporary photos of life in Arrowsic that you’d like to share for consideration for the 2026 Annual Report, we’d appreciate having them as well. You’ll get credit for the photo if it is used in the report. Contact Irene at irene.burgess@arrowsic.org with copies of your photos.

Large Piece of Glass Available

The large wooden table in town hall is undergoing some rehab that involves removing the glass sheet on top of it permanently. If you know of someone who may be interested in a large sheet of glass, 40″ X 118″ and about 1/4″ thick, or of places that may be interested in such an item, contact Irene at irene.burgess@arrowsic.org.

OTHER NEWSHoliday Happenings

The Christmas Holidays are rapidly approaching, and we have been busy preparing some Arrowsic holiday cheer plans! We will again have festive lights up on the Town Hall, with some new additions. We will have a Holiday Food Drive in conjunction with the Bath Area Food Bank. There will be a drop-off box at Town Hall. Stay tuned for more details on this.Santa Claus will be coming to Town Hall for our community’s youngsters (children and grandchildren!). Frank Daly, a veteran Santa complete with Santa attire, will be “ho, ho, ho-ing” for us. TY Frank! We’ll be having a Holiday Sing Along, led by several of our vocally gifted community members, as a wonderful chance to enjoy each other’s company and celebrate the season. And they will sing loud enough to drown out those of us who are vocally less gifted! In summary, on the evening of DECEMBER 11th – Bring your Food Drive contributions to Town Hall (if you have not dropped them off earlier).5:00 – 6:00: Santa Claus visiting hours!6:15 – 6:30: Holidays Lights switched on!6:30 – 7:30: Holiday Sing Along! If you have any questions or suggestions or want to get involved, reach out to Nick Stoneman via email Nick@katahdined.com, phone or text 507 210 9075.

What do Cooking Oil and Catalogs have in Common? Not much! But…here are two resources you may find useful! Recycling Used Cooking OilIf you’re planning to deep fry a turkey for Thanksgiving or want to perfect your favorite recipe for apple cider donuts or any other dish that requires large quantities of vegetable oil, you may be wondering what to do with all that used cooking oil. You can’t pour it down your drain (it will clog up pipes and cause issues in your septic).  You shouldn’t throw it in the woods (it can contaminate the soil, hinder plant growth, and attract pests). You can pour cooled oil into a sealable container and dispose of it in the trash. Or, even better, take it to a local recycling center.

Maine Standard Biofuels upcycles used cooking oil from residents and their sustainability partners to produce Bioheat, a blended biofuel that replaces #2 heating oil with no modifications. It burns cleaner while offering similar performance. Although they don’t yet deliver Bioheat to Arrowsic, you will be contributing to their mission to reduce CO2 emissions in Maine. They accept any amount of used cooking oil. Just drop it off in a sealed container at their facility at 51 Ingersoll Drive in Portland, Maine. If they are closed, you can leave it in front of their door.Declutter your MailboxWith the holidays fast approaching, you may have already noticed an increase in the number of direct mail catalogs in your mailbox. One way to put a stop to bulk mail and help the environment is to sign up for Catalog Choice. This non-profit organization offers a free service to cancel catalogs and other types of unsolicited “snail mail”. Simply sign up and select the merchants you no longer wish to receive catalogs from, and they will send an opt-out request on your behalf. Although they have no control over how quickly the merchant will respond, they do educate and encourage merchants to comply promptly. If you love their service, spread the word and consider making a donation, so they can continue in their quest to eliminate junk mail and save trees!Sustainable Seasons Greetings from the ARSWC!N95 and KN95 Masks Available at Arrowsic Town Hall

N95 and KN95 masks are now available at Arrowsic Town Hall for residents to take for free.  Please take as many as you want, as often as you want.  These masks are from a local public health group, and the supply will be replenished as needed. Contact information Altheo Colwell at altheocolwell@gmail.com  with questions about the masks or about the group supplying them.

Information on MDOT RTE 127 Construction

MDOT is planning to reconstruct two sections of Route 127 in Arrowsic and replace the culverts. The two sections are the places that frequently flood: the northern causeway across the marsh and the Fisher Eddy marsh. An informational meeting was held with 7 MDOT officials at Arrowsic Town Hall on October 13 with 27 attendees. A paper copy of MDOT’s plans is available for review at the town hall. The town submitted comments during the comment period (see link) and MDOT provided their response (see link)MDOT notice of Route 127 project to upgrade culverts and raise two sections of road.Town officials input to MDOT’s Route 127 plan MDOT response Also, the Engineering plans for the changes are available here.Select Board Meeting AgendaIn an effort to keep residents informed, the proposed Select Board Meeting Agenda will be posted in this newsletter the Monday prior to and the Monday of the Select Board Meeting. Change in Dates of November/December Arrowsic Recycling and Solid Waste Committee
There will be no meeting on November 20 or December 18. Instead, the Arrowsic Recycling and Solid Waste Committee will meet on December 11, from 5:30-7, at Town Hall.

Permits Issued
Mike Field, Arrowsic Code Enforcement Officer, issued the following permit.
Update on Sewall Pond Access off Route 127 From Mary Ann and Caitlin MacKenzie: Over time, growing public use of this privately-owned access point has led to more vehicles parking perpendicular further into the wooded area, leading to erosion and dying trees. Cars backing out into a 50+ mph roadway has also raised safety concerns. The boulders limit perpendicular parking to two vehicles and are intended to help prevent further erosion along the shoreline. Our goal is to continue working with the Town to install signage to restrict parallel parking past the boulders to the north and south as well as on the other side of the road. Signage will require action by the Town, installation by DOT, and enforcement by the County. Until then, we hope the boulders will better protect the trees and vegetation at the access point, and the shoreline along Route 127. Public use of the access point to the pond remains open. Thank you for your understanding and for helping to care for this special spot in Arrowsic. Select Board Meeting AgendaIn an effort to keep residents informed, the proposed Select Board Meeting Agenda will be posted in this newsletter the Monday prior to and the Monday of the Select Board Meeting. Axiom has worked diligently to resolve the technical problems as it transitioned its service to a new central switching facility. Most of us have seen improved service. Most recently, I discussed resetting your router if your service has no connection at all. That instruction sheet is attached for anyone who missed it. This applies to both Axiom-supplied and personal routers. However, sometimes the problem lies in our own router. If you are using your own router and are experiencing trouble connecting to websites or have short interruptions in service, it may be your routerOne customer was experiencing ongoing problems, and even Axiom was unable to determine the issue. The customer had purchased a reputable brand router (TP-Link Archer AX-55 ). Some TP-Link models are compatible, while others are not. At my suggestion, he switched to an Adtran 834-V6, and I quote,” The router is performing well. The connectivity issues that I was experiencing while using the Adtran 834-V6 have not occurred since making the change.” Some routers do not perform as advertised. You can rent an Adtran from Axiom or purchase one. Other routers work well. I use a Netgear Orbi mesh router after ditching a different TP-Link brand. When purchasing, look for a router that uses Wi-Fi 6 or better, has a 1 Gbps port, and is dual-band. Many other brands work as well.If you experience service issues, always contact Axiom, as they are more than willing to do everything possible to resolve them.  Sometimes it is as simple as resetting the modem and router if you have no service.Deer Season for MotoristsFrom Maine D.O.T:
Sometimes, a collision with a deer is unavoidable. Since we’re in the peak season for deer crashes, here’s what to do if you hit one:
1. Pull over safely but stay in your car.
2. Report it to the police. Call 911 only if there’s injury or chaos. Otherwise, the non-emergency line works fine.
3. Once it’s safe to exit your vehicle, snap pics for your insurance.
4. Call your insurer and take deep breaths. You’re not at fault — deer don’t follow traffic rules.
Bonus: if you report it properly, you might even get to keep the deer or donate it to a local food pantry! Maine is where dinner sometimes finds you.

Community Fun–Community Awareness Day

Thank you to everyone who came out last Saturday and made it such a success! It was wonderful to see so many neighbors gathered together, enjoying music, conversation, and the chance to connect with our town committees and local groups. The morning was full of energy, learning, and laughter—made even more fun by our exciting door prizes, including fire extinguishers and lidded metal ash buckets. A special thank-you to our young helper, who drew the winning names with great enthusiasm!
