From the Education Committee

THANK YOU  to the residents of our little island for supporting the Scholarship Fund during the recent yardsale and town meeting. We took in almost $2100.00 from the sale of items donated and actual cash donations. We continue to be grateful for the generosity of our neighbors.

We appreciate the townspeople’s approval of the increase in the award to our students, increasing from $2000.00 to $3000.00. We all know the cost of higher education is climbing and are pleased to be able to help our graduates. This years recipients are :
Danielle D’Souza- Northeastern University
Ren Kauffunger- Yale University
Isabella Morton- University of Rhode Island

Congratulations!

The Arrowsic Education Committee

ARSWC Tip of the Month

In Arrowsic, we decided many years ago that yard waste would not collected with curbside pickup. Landfilled organic matter undergoes anaerobic decomposition, generating potent greenhouse gasses. Meanwhile, grass clippings, leaves, weeds, and branches are, in fact, a precious resource which can be mulched directly into a lawn, composted or scattered in the woods to help build rich soil on our island.

Call for Submissions –– Summer Arrow

The next issue of the Arrow, our town’s independent newsletter, will be published next month. Please send anything you would like to contribute–articles, reports, notices, upcoming meetings—by June 29th to Karin Sadtler kasadtler@yahoo.com

Items for the Community News column, including births, deaths, graduations, personal activities, and other items of interest are requested.

We are especially interested in notes from new residents, introducing themselves and telling us why they moved to Arrowsic or what they particularly like about Arrowsic. Just a few lines is fine.

The Arrow is always looking for writers who wish to contribute, either occasionally or regularly. We would also very much like to include your favorite pictures from around the island.

And we are continuing to expand our Arts coverage and welcome your artwork, photos, poems, or stories. Please send those to Sharif Elmusa at selmusa@gmail.com.

Federal offices will be decided by ranked choice voting. The Maine Secretary of State’s website has a comprehensive description of what ranked choice voting is, and which races it applies to HERE.
There will also be a ballot for the RSU1 district budget referendum.

Annual Meeting Community Potluck

This year the Town’s Annual Town Meeting will be preceded by a community potluck “dinner”, held at the Fire Station, rain or shine, giving neighbors and friends a chance to gather, catch up, and enjoy some time together before the meeting begins. It will run from 5:00 p.m. – 6:15 p.m on Thursday, June 11.

Everyone is warmly encouraged to attend and, if able, bring a favorite dish to share. Ideas include potato salad, small sandwiches, salads, sliders, chips, fruit plates, nuts, desserts, treats, appetizers, or other easy-to-share items.

Serving and eating utensils as well as paper plates will be provided in addition to bottled water. If possible, please have your name on any container you bring so we can be sure we can return it to you when we are through! If possible, including a label describing your dish (e.g. curried chicken salad) would be very helpful.

Whether you bring something homemade or store-bought, the most important thing is our taking some time to enjoy each other’s company. We hope you’ll join us for good food, conversation, and fellowship before the evening’s Annual Meeting. If you have any questions, you can email Nick Stoneman at Nick@katahdined.com or give him a call or text at (507) 210 9075.

Trash and Recycling Contracts

The Arrowsic Recycling and Solid Waste Committee wants express sincere thanks to everyone who came to the Public Information and Comment Session last Monday. The feedback supporting pros and cons for both options was invaluable in helping us make a difficult decision. As a result, the Town has decided to award one year contracts to Roger’s for hauling and to Casella for disposal and processing.

Arrowsic Education Committee YARDSALE

Now that Spring is finally here, our YARDSALE for the benefit of the Scholarship Fund is quickly approaching.

We hope you are finding lots of treasures to donate while doing your spring cleaning. We will be accepting items for drop off on June 4 & 5 from 4-6pm at the Town Hall. Please no baby equipment and working electronics only.

We hope you will come and browse our treasures on June 6, 2026 from 9 – 1pm.

As always , we welcome volunteers for set up and cleanup.

ARSWC Tip of the Month – Recycle vs Trash Sorting Wizard

The Casella Recycle 101 App has a very handy sorting wizard which tells you whether an item can go into your recycling bin or needs to be disposed of as trash. Because we are not a hauling customer, the other functions will not work, and you will get unhelpful default locations in Vermont for items that cannot be collected curbside. But, if you often find yourself wondering if that yogurt container or aerosol really is recyclable or if you can leave plastic caps on bottles, it offers a quick, easy way to find out.
