Arrowsic Broadband In The News

The Bangor Daily News and Maine Monitor ran a story this week about Fidium overbuilding our small town fiber system, and it’s a good read.

Don Hudson and Vince Capone both did a great job of explaining the situation and making the case for residents continuing to get internet service from Arrowsic/Axiom.

One word I took away from the story was the quoted description from the Consolidated (Fidium parent) spokesperson: spillover. Running fiber here was just “spillover” from the work they’re doing in Bath and Woolwich. A telling remark, IMHO. If we’re an afterthought now, it’s a good bet that we’ll remain one.

Read the article here.

Fidium fiber internet

Dear Neighbors,

I found a postcard in my mail today from fidium fiber internet, and I suspect you did as well. It warrants our attention, and Iโ€™d like to make a few points explaining why the Town-owned fiber service is the best choice for all of us.

Why you donโ€™t want fidiumโ€ฆ

  • Fidium promises โ€œbetter internet is coming to town.โ€ That is simply not true. The fiber is the same. The equipment is the same. The customer service, however, is another story.
  • The introductory rate of โ€œstarting at $30/moโ€ looks shiny and attractive, but it is being used to try to drive the Town system out of business, is not sustainable for any provider, and their rate will ultimately be set not for your but for the benefit of their corporate shareholders.ย
  • They claim speeds of to 2 Gig available, but they are selling capacity you donโ€™t need and likely cannot even use.
  • Fidium and their parent Consolidated Communications both have dismal customer approval ratings. See TrustPilot, for example. Constant service outages and poor customer service are most frequently cited.

Why you do want Arrowsic/Axiomโ€ฆ

  • The current fiber-to-the-home internet provider is the Town of Arrowsic. We contract with Axiom to manage the business, but we – you – own it.
  • As a Town-owned business, we operate for the benefit of our residents.
  • We are not for profit. If excess funds are generated, they go into the Town coffers to reduce property taxes. (Not currently projected, but possible in the future.)
  • We are literally your neighbors. Arrowsicans put thousands of volunteer hours into bringing this service to our homes. And now we have a daily reason to make sure it works: nobody wants unhappy neighbors!

There are many things we enjoy about living on this island. We depend on each other. We feel a palpable sense of community. And we are proudly independent. Please think about how it affects the whole Town if you are considering switching to fidium.

Comments are always welcome.

Sincerely,
Your Select Board

Milly Stafford Annual Spring Roadside Cleanup

Now that the snow banks have melted back, it’s time to start thinking about hauling away the winter’s accumulation of trash. The Conservation Commission and the Recycling and Solid Waste Committee will once again team up to organize the “Milly Stafford Annual Spring Roadside Cleanup,” and all are cordially invited.

We will meet at the town hall on Saturday, April 26 at 9:30 a.m. Folks will be able to sign up for a section of road to cover, and take with them a set of color-coded trash bags (black for trash, white for returnables and recyclables). In case of rain, we will postpone the cleanup to Sunday the 27th, same time.

For more information, contact Phine Ewing at phineewing@gmail.com

Mike Field, Chief Enforcement Officer, has issued new building permits. Please go here for more information.

Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, May 3
Arrowsic residents may bring hazardous household items and materials for proper disposal at the Bath Public Works Garage on May 3rd. Information on materials accepted and a link to sign up for a time slot can be found here:  https://www.cityofbathmaine.gov/departments/PublicWorks/HHW

Make Way for Animals Crossing!
Name your environmental illโ€”dams, poaching, megafiresโ€”and consider that roads kill more creatures with less fanfare than any of them. -Ben Goldfarb

Spring is in full swing and animals are on the move! Whether itโ€™s a porcupine seeking out road salt or a migrating frog on a rainy night, itโ€™s a time of year when our cars become particularly lethal to the critters with whom we share this island. And so, fellow Arrowsicans, the Conservation Commission kindly asks you to slow down on the roads and look out for animals that are just trying to get to the other side. This is especially critical for amphibians on rainy nights when temperatures are above 40ยฐF. (Learn more here about amphibian migration.) We thank you!

Packardโ€™s Landingโ€™s May 17th Spring Work Day and Community Gathering!

The W.A.M.C invites all residents to come on over to Packardโ€™s Landing on May 17th and lend a helping hand on our Spring Work Day.

The fun begins at  9:00 a.m., wrapping up by 2:00 p.m. We expect the pier, ramp, and float to be in, so come on over and work for a while and then get out on the water! And, we are planning on having a potluck picnic around noontime, with Bob flipping burgers on the grill and others bringing over various food items.

As far as work goes, there is something for everybody: carpentry work on the barn and walkway, brush hauling to clean up the forest area, invasive species removal along with some native species planting, and some painting of the privy.

Bob is organizing the various projects so send him an email at arrowsica@gmail.com and Nick and Norma are organizing the potluck. You can send Nick an email at Nick@katahdined.com if youโ€™re able to share something for the potluck  (salads, veggie plates, chips, dessert item!, etc.)

We look at the day as a โ€œdoubleheaderโ€ โ€“ a chance to care for Packardโ€™s Landing, and a chance for it to host spring community get together!

Helping Arrowsic Recycle!

April is Earth Month, so we thought this would be a great time to remind you of town programs that promote sustainability and help you recycle or dispose of things responsibly. The ARSWC organizes several special recycling events throughout the year that we encourage you to participate in. These include:

  • May 3ย โ€“ย Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Day.ย We collaborate with the City of Bath and other surrounding towns to help residents properly dispose of HHW. Visit theย City of Bath HHWย page to learn more about what qualifies as HHW and sign up. Arrowsic has a limited number to time slots reserved, so we strongly encourage you to reach out to your neighbors to share tickets, so more residents can participate.
  • July 12ย โ€“ย Refrigerant and Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) Collection Day.ย We are working with a refrigerant and recycling company that can safely recover hazardous refrigerants and ODS from household appliances (for a fee). More details to come in June!
  • July 12ย โ€“ย Computer Monitor and TV Collection Day.ย In this popular biannual event, the ARSWC accepts unwanted monitors and TVs for proper disposal (for a fee). More details to come in June!
  • Fall 2025ย โ€“ย Bulky Items Pick Up.ย RC Rogers & Sons will once again be offering special pickup services for โ€œbulky itemsโ€ (e.g., furniture, appliances, large pieces of scrap metal, etc.).ย We havenโ€™t yet set the date, but weโ€™ll post a notice well in advance.

Another great resource is the Arrowsic Recycling Shed, located next to the Town Hall. Weโ€™ve organized this shed to make it easy for you to drop off certain common recyclable items that are not appropriate for biweekly curbside pick-up. In this shed, youโ€™ll find shelves and bins for dropping off natural corks, home and office electronics and cords with chargers, batteries (alkaline, lithium, nickel, and cadmium), scrap metal and electrical cords, Christmas lights, and returnable bottles and cans (all money from returnables benefits the Arrowsic Fire Department). We also stock extra Arrowsic Recycles stickers and Clynk bags in the shed. Please read the signs posted on the shed doors for instructions on what you can and canโ€™t leave there.

For more information on our recycling programs, please check out the Userโ€™s Guide to Recycling in Arrowsic or reach out to an ARSWC member. Thanks for helping us keep Arrowsicโ€™s recycling and solid waste in its proper place!
