IN OTHER NEWS …

TIME TO SIGN UP FOR A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) SHARE
What is a CSA?
A CSA connects customers to the source of their food, while providing local farmers with the year-round economic support they need to succeed. Members pay a fee at the beginning of the growing season and are guaranteed a share of the farm’s harvest throughout the season.

  • Mutual Benefits:
    • For Farmers: CSA’s provide farmers with a guaranteed income, which helps them plan and invest in their farms, and reduces the risk associated with market fluctuations.
    • For Consumers: Consumers gain access to fresh, locally grown produce, often at a lower price than buying from grocery stores and can learn about where their food comes from and how it is grown.

For a list of local CSAs from the Merrymeeting Food Council go HERE.
Maine Senior Farm Share Program.
The Maine Senior Farm Share Program is designed to increase access to fresh, local produce for low-income seniors. Eligible seniors pay $50 for a CSA share. For more information click on this link for the  Maine Department of Agriculture or call 287-3491 or email seniorfarmshare.agr@maine.gov.

LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS. OH MY! Well, maybe just bears

There were a few bear sightings in Arrowsic and Georgetown last year. Here are some tips from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife on what to do if you encounter a bear as they come out of hibernation.

In the woods

· Do not approach the bear.

· Quietly back away and leave the area.

In a building, dumpster, or around the corner

· Give the bear a clear escape route (do not corner it)

· Leave any doors open as you back away from the bear.

· Do not lock the bear in a room.

In your backyard

· From a safe distance, make loud noises, shout, or bang pots and pans together (to scare the bear)

· When the bear leaves, remove potential attractants such as garbage, birdseed, or pet food.

· Ask neighbors to remove attractants.

For more information on how to prevent bears from paying you a visit this spring go to this link: LIVING WITH BEARS from IF&W.
