Study on Island Groundwater Beginning:

Thanks to a grant from Maineโ€™s Community Resilience Partnership program, the WaterWise Team will be collecting data over the summer to create GIS maps depicting geologic features related to each islandโ€™s aquifer.

The data will be analyzed by Carol White, our consulting hydrogeologist, allowing us to estimate aquifer recharge characteristics, overall water quality, identify any risks to the aquifer and develop potential solutions. Results will be available before the end of the year.

Arrowsic residents identified protecting groundwater as a high priority in the Climate Action Plan that pass unanimously in 2024. We are excited that together Arrowsic and Georgetown received funding to examine our water quality and quantity over the next two years.

WaterWise Project Goals:

  • Provide citizens with information about their water quality.
  • Examine where saltwater intrusion might be taking place.
  • Help us prepare for changes in patterns of precipitation.
  • Conduct research on our groundwater in partnership with the Maine Geologic Survey.
  • Provide residents with best management practices for septic systems.

More frequent and intense storms coupled with rising sea level are already impacting our lives. Flooded roads and issues with our freshwater supply are just two examples that were given high priority for action in the Climate Action Plan that passed in 2024.

As part of the Maine Governorโ€™s Office of Policy and Innovation, Community Resilience Partnership we are working with town officials and committees to implement the actions outlined in the Climate Action Plan.
