Community Summer Potluck Brunch Gathering

The Water Access Management Committee aspires for Packardโ€™s Landing to be both a great place to launch your kayak or canoe, as well as a great gathering place for the community. Sooooโ€ฆ.. we invite you to come to a:

Community Summer Potluck Brunch Gathering
Saturday, August 23
11:00-2:00
(Rain Date 8/24)

Bring your kayak, a chair or two, share a dish or a dessert, and, of course, tell your friends to join you. Weโ€™ll be set up by the launch area with tables and our canopy tent. We may even have a few musicians providing entertainment. And in case you were worried, this is purely a social event โ€“ so no volunteer work is involved!

So come for a paddle or a swim, meet with friends and make some new ones, and enjoy a Sunday outdoor potluck brunch experience.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Milly Stafford Annual Spring Roadside Cleanup

Now that the snow banks have melted back, it’s time to start thinking about hauling away the winter’s accumulation of trash. The Conservation Commission and the Recycling and Solid Waste Committee will once again team up to organize the “Milly Stafford Annual Spring Roadside Cleanup,” and all are cordially invited.

We will meet at the town hall on Saturday, April 26 at 9:30 a.m. Folks will be able to sign up for a section of road to cover, and take with them a set of color-coded trash bags (black for trash, white for returnables and recyclables). In case of rain, we will postpone the cleanup to Sunday the 27th, same time.

For more information, contact Phine Ewing at phineewing@gmail.com

Building Permits

Mike Field, Chief Enforcement Officer, has issued new building permits. Please go here for more information.

Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, May 3
Arrowsic residents may bring hazardous household items and materials for proper disposal at the Bath Public Works Garage on May 3rd. Information on materials accepted and a link to sign up for a time slot can be found here:  https://www.cityofbathmaine.gov/departments/PublicWorks/HHW

Make Way for Animals Crossing!
Name your environmental illโ€”dams, poaching, megafiresโ€”and consider that roads kill more creatures with less fanfare than any of them. -Ben Goldfarb

Spring is in full swing and animals are on the move! Whether itโ€™s a porcupine seeking out road salt or a migrating frog on a rainy night, itโ€™s a time of year when our cars become particularly lethal to the critters with whom we share this island. And so, fellow Arrowsicans, the Conservation Commission kindly asks you to slow down on the roads and look out for animals that are just trying to get to the other side. This is especially critical for amphibians on rainy nights when temperatures are above 40ยฐF. (Learn more here about amphibian migration.) We thank you!

Packardโ€™s Landingโ€™s May 17th Spring Work Day and Community Gathering!

The W.A.M.C invites all residents to come on over to Packardโ€™s Landing on May 17th and lend a helping hand on our Spring Work Day.

The fun begins at  9:00 a.m., wrapping up by 2:00 p.m. We expect the pier, ramp, and float to be in, so come on over and work for a while and then get out on the water! And, we are planning on having a potluck picnic around noontime, with Bob flipping burgers on the grill and others bringing over various food items.

As far as work goes, there is something for everybody: carpentry work on the barn and walkway, brush hauling to clean up the forest area, invasive species removal along with some native species planting, and some painting of the privy.

Bob is organizing the various projects so send him an email at arrowsica@gmail.com and Nick and Norma are organizing the potluck. You can send Nick an email at Nick@katahdined.com if youโ€™re able to share something for the potluck  (salads, veggie plates, chips, dessert item!, etc.)

We look at the day as a โ€œdoubleheaderโ€ โ€“ a chance to care for Packardโ€™s Landing, and a chance for it to host spring community get together!

Helping Arrowsic Recycle!

April is Earth Month, so we thought this would be a great time to remind you of town programs that promote sustainability and help you recycle or dispose of things responsibly. The ARSWC organizes several special recycling events throughout the year that we encourage you to participate in. These include:

  • May 3ย โ€“ย Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Day.ย We collaborate with the City of Bath and other surrounding towns to help residents properly dispose of HHW. Visit theย City of Bath HHWย page to learn more about what qualifies as HHW and sign up. Arrowsic has a limited number to time slots reserved, so we strongly encourage you to reach out to your neighbors to share tickets, so more residents can participate.
  • July 12ย โ€“ย Refrigerant and Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) Collection Day.ย We are working with a refrigerant and recycling company that can safely recover hazardous refrigerants and ODS from household appliances (for a fee). More details to come in June!
  • July 12ย โ€“ย Computer Monitor and TV Collection Day.ย In this popular biannual event, the ARSWC accepts unwanted monitors and TVs for proper disposal (for a fee). More details to come in June!
  • Fall 2025ย โ€“ย Bulky Items Pick Up.ย RC Rogers & Sons will once again be offering special pickup services for โ€œbulky itemsโ€ (e.g., furniture, appliances, large pieces of scrap metal, etc.).ย We havenโ€™t yet set the date, but weโ€™ll post a notice well in advance.

Another great resource is the Arrowsic Recycling Shed, located next to the Town Hall. Weโ€™ve organized this shed to make it easy for you to drop off certain common recyclable items that are not appropriate for biweekly curbside pick-up. In this shed, youโ€™ll find shelves and bins for dropping off natural corks, home and office electronics and cords with chargers, batteries (alkaline, lithium, nickel, and cadmium), scrap metal and electrical cords, Christmas lights, and returnable bottles and cans (all money from returnables benefits the Arrowsic Fire Department). We also stock extra Arrowsic Recycles stickers and Clynk bags in the shed. Please read the signs posted on the shed doors for instructions on what you can and canโ€™t leave there.

For more information on our recycling programs, please check out the Userโ€™s Guide to Recycling in Arrowsic or reach out to an ARSWC member. Thanks for helping us keep Arrowsicโ€™s recycling and solid waste in its proper place!

TIME TO SIGN UP FOR A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) SHARE
What is a CSA?
A CSA connects customers to the source of their food, while providing local farmers with the year-round economic support they need to succeed. Members pay a fee at the beginning of the growing season and are guaranteed a share of the farm’s harvest throughout the season.

  • Mutual Benefits:
    • For Farmers:ย CSAโ€™s provide farmers with a guaranteed income, which helps them plan and invest in their farms, and reduces the risk associated with market fluctuations.ย
    • For Consumers:ย Consumers gain access to fresh, locally grown produce, often at a lower price than buying from grocery stores and can learn about where their food comes from and how it is grown.ย

For a list of local CSAs from the Merrymeeting Food Council go HERE.
Maine Senior Farm Share Program.
The Maine Senior Farm Share Program is designed to increase access to fresh, local produce for low-income seniors. Eligible seniors pay $50 for a CSA share. For more information click on this link for the  Maine Department of Agriculture or call 287-3491 or email seniorfarmshare.agr@maine.gov.

LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS. OH MY! Well, maybe just bears

There were a few bear sightings in Arrowsic and Georgetown last year. Here are some tips from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife on what to do if you encounter a bear as they come out of hibernation.

In the woods

ยท Do not approach the bear.

ยท Quietly back away and leave the area.

In a building, dumpster, or around the corner

ยท Give the bear a clear escape route (do not corner it)

ยท Leave any doors open as you back away from the bear.

ยท Do not lock the bear in a room.

In your backyard

ยท From a safe distance, make loud noises, shout, or bang pots and pans together (to scare the bear)

ยท When the bear leaves, remove potential attractants such as garbage, birdseed, or pet food.

ยท Ask neighbors to remove attractants.

For more information on how to prevent bears from paying you a visit this spring go to this link: LIVING WITH BEARS from IF&W.

Someone Left This Plastic Drum in Front of the Recycling Shed!

Once againโ€ฆ Town Hall is not a dump for random items! A list of specific items and materials accepted at the Recycling Shed is listed at the Shed as well as on the Arrowsic website.

If this drum is yours, please retrieve it and contact us for advice on proper disposal. Aside from the Shed not being the right place for it, not knowing what contaminants it may contain makes safe and proper disposal problematic. We are always happy to answer questions. Catch us in person or drop an email to arswc@arrowsic.org. We are really very friendly!

Arrowsians should be proud of belonging to a community where residents are usually extremely diligent about responsibly recycling and managing waste.

We sincerely thank you.

Ready for Green Spring Cleaning?

Now that mud season is almost over, itโ€™s great time to go green while you spring clean. All it takes is a little extra planning! Here are 5 tips on how you can reduce your contribution to the landfill while getting rid of excess clutter in your home.  Before you start loading up your trash bin, separate out piles for recycling and rehoming:

  • Place clean and dry household items made from paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, or tin in your recycling bin for curbside pickup.
  • Take gently used items you think other residents of Arrowsic might need or want to the Arrowsic Swap Barn.
  • Recycle or trade-in unwanted electronics atย Staplesย in Brunswick โ€“ or bring them to the Arrowsic Recycling Shed and the ARSWC will recycle them for you.
  • Donate clothing, toys, furniture, and other goods to local charities, such asย Goodwillย in Brunswick or the Habitat for Humanityย Restoreย in Bath. Theย Freecycle Community Groupย for Topsham is another helpful non-profit resource for giving and getting used goods.
  • Check with an ARSWC member if you have questions or need advice on how to recycle, repurpose, or rehome your stuff.ย We love talking trash (and recycling).

The ARSWC will be launching its own green spring-cleaning project in the Swap Barn next month. We plan to sort through items that have been on shelves for a bit too long โ€“ and donate them to local charities or recycle them as appropriate. If there is something in the barn that you covet, but havenโ€™t yet claimed, stop by before April 19 or it may be gone!
